More than 2,000 are reported dead after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake rocked Haiti’s northern peninsula on Saturday, August 14. Seventh-day Adventist Church leaders confirmed that several church members are among those who died. To make matters worse, Tropical Storm Grace pummeled the island with wind and rain just days following the earthquake. The numbers of dead and those reported missing continue to climb.
“Again, Haiti has been struck with a major earthquake, followed by Hurricane Grace. It is devastating to learn that more than 2,000 people, including children, have died in this horrible disaster, and many more have been reported missing,” said G. Earl Knight, Atlantic Union Conference President. “Jose Joseph, Atlantic Union Conference vice president with special responsibilities for Haitian Ministries and Adventist Community Service, has been communicating with his counterparts in North America Division to determine the most appropriate response to this tragic loss of lives and the ongoing suffering. We pray that the people of Haiti will be able to receive swift relief. May the hand of God protect His people from further harm and danger.”
